The seniors of the GBG Debating Club participated in the Debating Society Germany weekend in Heidelberg from March 20th to March 22nd. During this event, rounds 5–8 of the Senior League were held. Our team had to compete against experienced and well-established teams from Stuttgart, Freiburg, and Frankfurt.
In the prepared motions, which included topics such as “This house opposes the decline of religiosity in the West” and “Once self-driving cars are fully developed and widely available, This House will ban humans from driving,” participants had to engage with a wide range of challenging and diverse issues. Although our team was unfortunately unable to secure a win this time against such strong opponents, everyone agreed that the experience was highly educational, varied, and enjoyable. The team strengthened its sense of unity and, through impressive debates, was able to discover new strategies that will certainly be beneficial in the next season. It was also a great opportunity to explore the university in Heidelberg’s old town and to enjoy a meal together at the end of the weekend. The Debating Club would like to thank the school and the Friends’ Association of the Georg-Büchner-Gymnasium for their support, without which such a project would be much more difficult to realize.
In contrast, the Juniors, our younger debating group, were much more successful on their most recent competition day. At their last tournament in Freiburg, they managed to win both of their debates – an outstanding achievement. The impromptu debate focused on the topic of pocket money, while the prepared motion dealt with the challenging question of how to handle dangerous but effective medication. The success of the Juniors highlights the strong development and promising future of the Debating Club.
The Debating Club is always happy to welcome new members. Under the guidance of Ms. Genseke and Mr. Christoph, we meet once a week after school for an hour.
GBG Debating Club beim Senior League Wochenende in Heidelberg
Die Seniors des GBG Debating Clubs nahmen am Wochenende vom 20. bis 22. März am Debating-Wochenende der Debating Society Germany in Heidelberg teil. Dabei wurden die Runden 5–8 der Senior League ausgetragen. Unser Team musste sich unter anderem mit erfahrenen und etablierten Teams aus Stuttgart, Freiburg und Frankfurt messen. In den vorbereiteten Debatten zu Themen wie „This house opposes the decline of religiosity in the West“ und „Once self-driving cars are fully developed and widely available, This House will ban humans from driving“ waren erneut sehr unterschiedliche und anspruchsvolle Fragestellungen zu bearbeiten. Gegen die starken Gegner konnte unser Team dieses Mal leider keinen Sieg erringen, dennoch waren sich alle einig, dass das Wochenende sehr lehrreich, abwechslungsreich und spaßig war. Das Team konnte das Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl stärken und in eindrucksvollen Debatten neue Strategien kennenlernen, die in der kommenden Saison sicherlich hilfreich sein werden. Außerdem blieb noch genügend Zeit, die Universität in der Heidelberger Altstadt zu besichtigen und gemeinsam essen zu gehen. Der Debating Club bedankt sich herzlich für die Unterstützung durch die Schule sowie den Freundeskreis des Georg-Büchner-Gymnasiums, ohne deren Hilfe die Durchführung eines solchen Projekts deutlich schwieriger wäre.
Die Juniors, unser Debating-Nachwuchs, waren dagegen an ihrem letzten Wettkampftag deutlich erfolgreicher. Bei ihrem Turnier in Freiburg konnten sie beide Debatten für sich entscheiden – ein großartiger Erfolg. Die Stegreifrede behandelte das Thema Taschengeld, während sich die vorbereitete Debatte mit dem anspruchsvollen Umgang mit gefährlichen, aber wirksamen Medikamenten beschäftigte. Der Erfolg der Juniors zeigt die positive Entwicklung und das große Potenzial des Debating Clubs.
Der Debating Club freut sich jederzeit über neue Mitglieder. Unter der Leitung von Frau Genseke und Herrn Christoph treffen wir uns einmal pro Woche nach der Schule für eine Stunde.
