The GBG Debating Club has once again demonstrated its talent and commitment by winning the prepared debate round against Goethe-Gymnasium Emmendingen. The motion for the debate was “This house believes that smoking should be forbidden.” Our team presented a compelling case, arguing that society is already on the path toward banning smoking, with complete prohibition likely within the next 15 to 20 years across the European Union.
Our key arguments focused on the severe health risks for both smokers and passive smokers, as well as the potential to significantly reduce financial pressure on public health systems. The strength and clarity of our case made it difficult for the opposing team to counter effectively, leading to a well-deserved victory for GBG.
In the impromptu round, however, we faced a tough challenge against the Frankfurt International School. Despite presenting a well-structured and thoughtful case, we were edged out by the more refined and polished speaking style of our opponents.
These two debates marked the final rounds of the Junior League before the upcoming finals in July. We proudly conclude the season with an even score of three wins and three defeats — a remarkable achievement for our first year in competitive debating.
We now eagerly await the final individual speaker results for our dedicated team members: Matti, Simon, Eylül, Aurelia, Amira, and Dilara. Each of them has shown great skill, teamwork, and passion throughout the season.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to build on this year’s experience and can’t wait for the next debating season to begin. The GBG Debating Club meets every Friday at 13:05 in Room 003. New members are always welcome — come join us and find your voice!
